Star Trek sequel to film in January

.
J.J. Abrams's Star Trek sequel will begin production early next year.

Bruce Greenwood, who plays original Enterprise captain Christopher Pike, revealed the news to Hollywood.com, adding that he isn't certain if he will return for the follow-up.

He said: "I just know that the plan is to film it in January. More than that, I don't know. I hope [to come back]. I'm hustling for it... we'll see..."

The Star Trek sequel is due for release on June 29, 2012.
Elite Force on Netbook?
Posted by RawShark on Thu, Jul 8th 2010, 10:19 am

I spoke before about running Quake 3 engine games on a netbook using custom resolutions, and briefly mentioned Elite Force.

Well yesterday I went to install it using the Linux installer and found that no matter what I did (or what installer I used), it wanted to mount the CD! No good - netbooks don't have CD drives. Solution?

Just create a directory call 'Elite Force' somewhere on your hard disk and download this file to it (make executable). Then create a sub-directory called 'BaseEF' and put the pak files from the CD(s) or another PC install in there. Run the executable (with correct args for custom resolution) and away you go .

Bad news - I've brought down the Open Arena server we had running (it was quite heavy on memory and wasn't getting much traffic).

Good news - we now have a Star Trek Elite Force server! And not just any regular Elite Force server, it's 64 bit and based on the ioquake3 code .

Check it out and set phasers to FRAG....

Note to Captain Kirk: Warp speed will kill you
Posted by RawShark on Mon, Apr 12th 2010, 2:49 pm
.
A US boffin has effectively put the mockers on Star Trek-style warp speed travel to the stars by warning that interstellar hydrogen gas would become deadly to humans as they approached the speed of light.

Professor William Edelstein of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine explained to New Scientist that while interstellar space has just a couple of hydrogen atoms per cubic centimetre, as the crew of the Enterprise hit the gas pedal, a compression effect would greatly increase the number of atoms hitting the spacecraft.

As the spaceship reached 99.999998 per cent of the speed of light, "hydrogen atoms would seem to reach a staggering 7 teraelectron volts", which for the crew "would be like standing in front of the Large Hadron Collider beam".

This is a very bad thing, because humans in the path of this ray would receive a dose of ionising radiation of 10,000 sieverts, and as Bones McCoy would doubtless confirm, the lethal dose is 6 sieverts. The result? Death in one second.

The spacecraft's structure would do little to mitigate the effects of the killer hydrogen. Edelstein "calculates that a 10-centimetre-thick layer of aluminium would absorb less than 1 per cent of the energy", and the intense doses of radiation would damage the ship's structure and fry its electronics.

Edelstein grimly concluded: "Hydrogen atoms are unavoidable space mines."

The professor presented his killer calculations to an American Physical Society meeting in Washington DC on Saturday. Of course, Edelstein's conclusions are based on current scientific knowledge. No doubt future spacecraft designers will deploy advanced radiation-resistant alloys and magnetic shielding to protect Federation staff from instant death .
Shatner to Trek one more time?

William Shatner is in consideration to return in the next Star Trek film as an aged James T. Kirk.

Although Shatner's Kirk met his end in Star Trek: Generations (1994), with the new alternate continuum created in the previous film the writers now see an good opportunity to resurrect Kirk.

According to J.J. Abrams, the time travel-alternate reality concept used in the previous film was a deliberate ploy to enable a reboot for new films: "The idea, now that we are in an independent timeline, allows us to use any of the ingredients from the past - or come up with brand-new ones - to make potential stories."

The writers currently feel that the Borg are the most likely candidate to be the antagonists for this film, drawing parallels with the Star Wars theme of "man/machine" immortalized by Darth Vader; they feel it would be interesting to get the Borg, who mechanized their organic bodies but left them without any personality, to rediscover their spirit just as Vader did.

It is also chronological to bring in the Borg from The Next Generation after the Romulans from the original Star Trek.

Interestingly, the writers considered using the "Planet X" storyline, where the Enterprise crew encounter and team up with the X-Men to save the universe!

However, this was ultimately vetoed in view of rights issues, keeping the focus solely Trek-oriented, and the fact that casting Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier instead of Enterprise captain Jean-Luc Picard would be too much of an outrage among Trek fans .
Star Trek Blu-ray Box Comes With Virtual Admiral's Uniform

.
A limited number of the new Star Trek: The Original Series Season 3 Blu-ray box sets will include a code that unlocks a special outfit in the forthcoming Star Trek Online massively multiplayer game.

Those who want to nab the exclusive admiral’s outfit — we’re hoping it’ll be the nifty red number that Kirk wears in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan — will want to grab the Blu-ray box set when it comes out in December.

If you’re a Star Trek fan and haven’t seen the new, remastered episodes of the original series, you’re missing out. The first season can be streamed through Netflix on your PC or Xbox 360 and comes with the highest recommendation.

Cryptic Studios is now taking applications for Atari’s Star Trek Online closed beta. The game’s release date is still up in the air, so there’s no telling how long it’ll be before Star Trek fans actually get to puff up their chests and try on their new uniforms!
Star Trek - reviewed

I went to the advanced screening of Star Trek last night, having won the tickets last week. This is my short review for all you readers out there.

If you are a fan of Star Trek, like myself, you will give this movie a very solid 9 out of 10, if not the full 10. It is absolutely mind-blowing, and touches your mind in a really special way due to your familiarity with the ship, the crew, the music. Everything is familiar, yet different. It's like remembering the taste of a sweet you last ate when you were a kid .

There are plenty of references to other stuff in the Star Trek universe, and enough "in jokes" to keep hardcore fans occupied for days.

I was frankly nervous when I heard they were going to rely on that old si-fi script writer "get out of jail free card", the time travel/temporal anomaly story. However, they've used it brilliantly. Not only have they allowed us to see things that we've only ever heard of from characters in the series, they've altered everything enough to make it fresh and exciting again. They've also cleverly created an alternative timeline (much like recent Bond and Batman reboots) which basically writes the creators a new artistic license to do whatever they want - and boy do they exercise the right! See if you can guess what planet gets completely annihilated, which basically nullifies half of the stories in Next Generation, DS9 and Voyager! History is changed forever, which means anyone can die at any time - adding a suspense element you usually don't get in prequels because you kinda know which characters will survive!

The movie has other surprises too - references to modern culture are there, and little nods to currently popular TV si-fi exist. However, only die-hard fans will spot these.

The actors all do a fine job playing their parts, without attempting to impersonate the original actors too much. My hat is off to Karl Urban (he of Lord of The Rings and Doom fame). He nails the Dr. McCoy part brilliantly, and I'm sure DeForest Kelley would have been proud of him.

The ship, the Enterprise, looks great. You get a sense of size and proportion never present in the original series and there are some fantastic space battle scenes involving her. My most favourite visual effect in the whole movie was a shot of the Enterprise rising slowly out of the rings of Saturn - I nearly cried!

I'll definitely need to see the movie again before saying any more, and fully intend to do just that. The film had other surprises too, in the form of viewer reactions. My girlfriend thought Spock (Zachary Quinto) was "hot". I didn't see that one coming. He is perfect for the role of Spock, but I'd never have thought anyone could make that character appealing to women!

Oh, little tip, if you DO take your girlfriend/wife to this movie, let her drool over Spock as much as she wants - just ignore her if she tries to get you to explain alternative timelines. It is now my professional opinions that women simply cannot understand time travel. I pity the fool who tries as hard as I did to explain the concept - and for God's sake don't even mention "paradox" .

Conclusion? Go see this movie! (girlfriend optional)

I've only gone and won tickets to the Advanced Screening of the new Star Trek movie next Tuesday .

Irish movie website movies.ie regularly run competitions like this, and if you sign up you will most likely win one sooner or later! I know this other dude who won tickets to the Hulk premiere last year.

It's also quite a nice site, with trailers, galleries, reviews etc. You can also use "movie alerts" via RSS feeds. Nice .

Old School Star Trek returning to TV?
Posted by RawShark on Wed, Mar 11th 2009, 2:03 pm
.
Bryan Fuller, creator of the TV show Pushing Daisies and a former Star Trek writer and producer, is geared up to return to the glory days of the Federation .

The new Star Trek TV show would be based on "old style" Star Trek, rather than the more recent incarnations and variations: Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise (which SHOULD have been old style) and (of course) Star Trek: The Next Generation.

There hasn't been a Star Trek TV series since Enterprise was (deservedly) canceled after four seasons in 2005.

Fuller wrote twenty one Star Trek episodes over four years, two in Deep Space Nine's final season, and the rest for Voyager (which ere excellent). He also produced Voyager's last season.

If J.J. Abrams' reboot is successful (and the latest trailer suggests it will be!) perhaps we'll see him involved with a new Star Trek TV show with the style and impact of Fringe or Lost.

Besides his work on many episodes of Trek, Fuller's work includes Dead Like Me and some of the best of Heroes.
