Minority Report OS brought to life
Posted by RawShark on Wed, Nov 19th 2008, 12:14 pm
.
Behold! Science fiction becomes science fact once again!

Dubbed g-speak, the mind bending OS combines "gestural i/o, recombinant networking, and real-world pixels," to deliver what the creators call "the first major step in [a] computer interface since 1984."

Basically, it's a complete, real-world working version of the UI Tom Cruise was fondling in Minority Report .

The similarity is no coincidence: one of the developer Oblong's founders served as science advisor to Minority Report and based the design of those scenes directly on his earlier work at MIT.

Imagine playing games with this interface! I'm sure Nintendo and others will have more than an mild interest.....

How to Break a World of Warcraft Addiction
Posted by RawShark on Tue, Nov 18th 2008, 2:34 pm
.
There are many documented cases of why World of Warcraft is probably the most addictive game on the planet - with players sacrificing marriages, jobs and friends in pursuit of …what exactly?

In Korea, a couple was charged with manslaughter after they lost track of time during a marathon WoW session and left their infant alone who accidentally suffocated (like heroin addicts in Trainspotting or some sh*t). Another story involves two gamers who actually DIED a few years ago training for a difficult quest for days at a time!

So how to beat the addiction, and when to try? Well, check out these tips from wikiHow if you are playing this game for more than 10 hours at time - or ANY game for 10 hours at a time for that matter!

Games are fun, I know, but seriously, get a life (and/or a girlfriend, and not a GAMER girlfriend) you guys .

New Star Trek Trailer
Posted by RawShark on Tue, Nov 18th 2008, 1:29 pm
.
Holy cow! I've just watched the new Star Trek trailer (about 4 times) and am totally blown away.

I had my doubts at first about this movie, but the trailer makes it look just awesome .

They have romulans from the future, which I would have to disagree with (Enterprise pulled the same sh*t with Klingons) for this reason - I remember the TOS episode where the crew saw Romulans for the first time - so once again the continuity timeline is distorted by a prequel (see Star Wars, AVP, Exorcist series, The Scorpion King etc etc)

However, the trailer still rocks so I'm willing to forgive. The movie is not out until next May, so no doubt there will be more trailers to follow, plus possible comic book tie-ins, animations etc.

Let the hype begin......check out the trailer in our Videos section.

Left 4 Dead!
Posted by RawShark on Fri, Nov 14th 2008, 12:20 pm
.
I see from the EA site that Left 4 Dead is released next week, just in time for Christmas!

Set in the immediate aftermath of the zombie apocalypse, Steam Powered L4D offers four expansive "movie campaigns" that challenge you and your fellow survivors to battle thousands of swarming zombies as you travel across the rooftops of an abandoned metropolis, through rural ghost towns and pitch-black forests. In addition to the movie campaigns, Left 4 Dead features a Versus mode that allows you to play as the Boss Zombies .

The game is released for PC and Xbox on the 21st of thi month, but you can check out the (crazy requirements) PC demo NOW from here. Get some!

I've uploaded some screenshots from the demo to here.

EA debuts fitness videogame for Wii
Posted by RawShark on Fri, Nov 14th 2008, 11:28 am
.
Electronic Arts Inc unveiled its first personal training product on Thursday, tapping into the growing appeal of video games as fitness systems as seen with Nintendo Co Ltd's hit title Wii Fit earlier this year.

The 60 dollar title, EA Sports Active, is exclusive to Nintendo's Wii console, and will hit store shelves in March 2009. Targeted toward women as a low-cost alternative to joining sports club or gym, the game features an interactive computer trainer, and crafts running, boxing and other heart-pumping exercises to the user's desires.

Such games are among an expanding list of casual titles for game systems that draw in new users to the gaming industry, which hopes to escape the global economic crisis that has hurt many companies and retailers, and threatens the crucial holiday shopping season.

Other games include Ubisoft's Allen Carr's Easyway to Stop Smoking and My Weight Loss Coach for the Nintendo DS portable game system.
25 Years Ago Today, Bill Gates Announced Windows 1.0
Posted by RawShark on Tue, Nov 11th 2008, 4:44 pm
.
Two decades and a half ago today, Bill Gates unveiled Microsoft's first operating systems. Oh, it wasn't for sale yet - no, no, it's still only 1983 and we wouldn't see Windows on store shelves until 1985. But that didn't stop the young heart throb Gates.

Gates wasn't at all shy when promoting his debut Windows OS at New York's Helmsley Palace Hotel that day, claiming that it, powered by a unique graphical interface, would be running 90% of IBM systems by 1984 (before missing the launch date by a year, of course).

To his credit, that ridiculously lofty number is just about identical to the Windows marketshare of today .
