Urban Terror is a total conversion mod of id Software's first-person shooter Quake III Arena. It introduces many elements of the tactical shooter genre - team-driven gaming in more realistic environments.
The game itself is free, but developers FrozenSand retains the rights; unauthorised modification and selling is not allowed. Since Urban Terror 4.0, the mod can also be played as a stand-alone game without Quake III Arena using the ioUrbanTerror engine, which is a rebranding of the ioquake3 engine distributed under GNU General Public License.
Our server runs Urban Terror in 'Free For All' Deathmatch mode (we like deathmatch!) as a mod under ioquake3, but you can also connect with the standalone version.
Server Hardware
The altFIRE Urban Terror Server resides (on a virtualized operating system) on a Dual 64 bit AMD Quad-Core server with 8 GB of RAM. Obviously, an Urban Terror server doesn't actually need this kind of power to run, so we actually have ours running on a virtual server with 512 MB of RAM and a single core 64 bit processor - which is loads.
Server Software
Our operating system of choice for the server (or any server, for that matter) is 64 bit Debian Linux. The Urban Terror server software itself is also open source - we use 64 bit ioquake3, a cross-platform implementation of Quake 3, to power our instance of the game.
You can still connect to this server using 32 bit clients on any other platform, thanks to ioquake3's use of virtual machines. We are running a 'pure' server, so no custom maps or models are in use - connecting should be painless enough without the need to download additional files.
Server Configuration
The altFIRE Urban Terror game runs a default map cycle in sequential rotation. The max players is set to 8. Maps run with a timelimit of 15 minutes and a fraglimit of 20. When either is reached, the next map will load. The server is password protected, so only registered altFIRE members can play.
Getting and installing Urban Terror
You obviously will need a copy of Urban Terror to connect to the server and play. The good news is that this game is completely free. You can download for your particular platform from the official site at http://www.urbanterror.net.
Connecting to the server
As long as your version of Urban Terror is up to date, connecting to the server is simple. To connect to the server, do the following:
1) Start Urban Terror
2) Drop the command console using the ' key (usually beside number key 1)
3) Type the following to set your password the same as the server:
/password password
The "/" is important. The password is not actually "password", of course. The real password is sent to you when you register.
