Introduction

Quake 3 (aka Quake III Arena) is a multiplayer first-person shooter computer and video game released on December 2, 1999. The game was developed by id Software and featured music composed by Sonic Mayhem and Front Line Assembly. Quake 3 is the third title in the series and differs from the previous games in the Quake series in that it excludes the normal single-player element, instead focusing upon multiplayer action.

The Quake 3 community is still very active today, and the game will now run on nearly any PC. Because everyone now also has broadband, it makes sense to have dedicated online servers that can run 24/7. This page details one such server.

Server Details

Our game server is a 64 bit AMD box with 4 GB of RAM running 64 bit Debian Linux. One of the many games we run on this powerful server is Quake III Arena (aka Quake 3), using the secure (and much improved) ioquake3 engine.

The altFIRE Quake 3 server runs a mix of both default and custom maps, with a timelimit of 15 minutes and a fraglimit of 25. When either is reached, the next map will load.

If you connect to this server and don't have the current running map, an attempt will be made to download it to your PC. Be sure to have Automatic Downloading switched on in your multiplayer options to help with this (see Post-install Configuration below). Otherwise, you won't be able to play!

The server is password protected, so only registered altFIRE members can play.

Getting and installing Quake 3

You obviously will need a copy of Quake 3 to connect to the server and play. If using Windows or Mac OS X, just buy a copy and install. We would also highly recommend installing ioquake3 to add extra features and enhancements to your Quake 3 installation (eg. faster map downloads by using http to a web server).

If you are using Linux, simply install the Linux version of ioquake3 and copy pak0.pk3 from either the game CD or from another machine (or partition) with Quake 3 installed.

Note: After installation, run ioquake3 from the terminal. If you get any errors regarding 'openal.so.1', then do the following command: ln -s /usr/lib/openal.so.0 /usr/lib/openal.so.1. Boxed versions of Quake 3 for Linux have also been spotted in the wild.

Quake 3 comes in several other formats, some technically compatible with the server (some adjustments would be needed).

Note: Windows users can also use ioquake3 if preferred. This engine is particuarly recommended if trying to run games on a netbook at custom resolutions.

Post-install Configuration

Because the server uses custom maps, sounds, models etc, it is important that you are able to access this content. To do this, you need to switch on 'Automatic Downloading'. This is done under the 'Game Options' sub-menu 'Setup'.

You can now proceed to connecting to the server.

Connecting to the server

As long as your version of Quake 3 is up to date, connecting to the server is simple. To connect to the server, do the following:

1) Start Quake 3
2) Drop the command console using the ' key (usually beside number key 1)
3) Type the following to set your password the same as the server:

/password password

The "/" is important. The password is not actually "password", of course. The real password is sent to you when you register.

4) Type the following to initiate the connection:

/connect quake3.altfire.com

Enjoy! Any problems, let me know (rawshark@alfire.com).

WTF CTF

In WTF CTF for Quake 3, each map has its own weapon from the Shotgun to the BFG, and a power-up to complement the weapon. The maps were optimised to give good frame rate. The game play is very fast as maps only connect the bases in one way, a small path through the center. This makes CTF games one long frag fest. Bots play the maps really well and we have loaded some into our Quake 3 server. So if you're looking to increase your weapon skillz, this is for you. Newbies need not apply!

Address: quake3.altfire.com:27961

Note: Make sure Automatic Downloading is switched ON to get the required map files.

Domination

In Quake 3 Domination mod you "Capture" the domination points. While you hold a control point, your team gains points at a rate of 1 point every 2 seconds. The more points you have, the more points you will get. The first team to reach "dominationlimit" points wins the match. This mod is based on the gameplay mode of the same name from Unreal Tournament.

Address: quake3.altfire.com:27962

Note: You will need the Domination mod files to play. These should finish up in a directory named "domination" under you quake3 installation eg. /usr/local/games/ioquake3/domination/

You MUST start Quake 3 Domination from the COMMAND LINE to play on the server.

On Linux

./ioquake3.i386 +set fs_game domination +connect quake3.altfire.com:27962

or on Windows

quake3.exe +set fs_game domination +connect quake3.altfire.com:27962

Alternatively, Windows users can download and use dominate.exe which should be placed in your quake3 directory and site one level above your dominate files (at same level as other .exe files)

Free Alternative

There is, of course, a completely 100% alternative to buying a copy of Quake 3. OpenArena is is an open-source content package for Quake 3 licensed under the GPL, effectively creating a free stand-alone game. You do not need Quake 3 to play this game. There are plenty of servers out there for Open Arena, probably more than for Quake 3 at this point!

Urban Terror, which also runs on our game server, is also completely 100% free. If you fancy some realistic urban combat rather than the Quake universe, then maybe you should check out our server!
