OpenArena Server
The following is information about the altFIRE Dedicated OpenArena Server.

- Introduction
- Server Hardware
- Server Software
- Server Configuration
- Getting and installing OpenArena
- Connecting to the server
Introduction

OpenArena is an open source first-person shooter computer game based heavily on the Quake III Arena style deathmatch. OpenArena's greatest goal is to make a completely free, open source FPS game that derives itself strongly from Quake 3. Its game engine is ioquake3, based upon id Software's GPL id Tech 3.

Our server runs OpenArena in 'Free For All' Deathmatch mode.

Server Hardware

The altFIRE OpenArena Server resides (on a virtualized operating system) on a Dual 64 bit AMD Quad-Core server with 8 GB of RAM. Obviously, an OpenArena server doesn't actually need this kind of power to run, so we have ours running on a virtual server with 512 MB of RAM and a single core 64 bit processor - which is loads.

Server Software

Our operating system of choice for the server (or any server, for that matter) is 64 bit Debian Linux. The OpenArena server software itself is also open source - we are currently running version 0.8.1 (the most recent stable release) of the game.

Server Configuration

The altFIRE OpenArena game runs a default map cycle in sequential rotation. The max players is set to 8. Maps run with a timelimit of 15 minutes and a fraglimit of 20. When either is reached, the next map will load. We have opted to NOT password protect the OpenArena server, so even unregistered readers can play!

Getting and installing OpenArena

You MUST be running the same version of OpenArena as the server to play. Currently we are running version 0.8.1 - you can grab the required files from here. This one zip file has files for Linux, MacOS X and Windows 9X/2000/XP.

Connecting to the server

As long as your version of OpenArena is the same as the server, connecting is simple. To connect to the server, do the following:

1) Start OpenArena
2) Drop the command console using the ' key (usually beside number key 1)
3) Type the following to initiate the connection:

/connect 193.1.40.166:27971

That's it! Enjoy the game :)

We also run a full blown Quake 3 server - you can check it out here.
