Introduction

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (aka Quake Wars aka ET:QW) is a first-person shooter video game, and is the follow-up to the 2005 title Quake 4. It is also the first game in the series to be rated T by the ESRB (With the descriptors of Mild Language and Violence. Mild Blood is featured but only on the Microsoft Windows version). It is set in the same science fiction universe as Quake 2 and Quake 4, with a minimal back-story serving as a prequel to Quake 2. It is the second multiplayer-focused game in the Quake series after Quake III Arena.

Quake Wars features similar gameplay to Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, but with the addition of controllable vehicles and aircraft as well as multiple AI deployables, asymmetric teams, much larger maps and the option of computer-controlled bot opponents. Unlike the previous Enemy Territory games, Quake Wars is a commercial release rather than a free download.

Taking place in the year 2065, the game lets you play as the GDF or Strogg in one of five unique character classes, either online or offline with computer controlled AI teammates and opponents.

Quake Wars utilized a modified version of the id Tech 4 engine with the addition of a technology called 'MegaTexture', a new texture mapping technique developed by John Carmack of id Software. This technology allows maps to be totally unique, without any repeated terrain tiles. Battlefields can be rendered to the horizon without any fogging, with over a square mile of terrain at inch-level detail, while also providing terrain-type detail that defines such factors as bullet hit effects, vehicle traction, sound effects, and so on.

Reviews for this game are generally very positive, scoring in the 8-9 (out of 10) range. Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 reviews for the game were generally much less positive, citing game issues and inferior graphics to the PC version as causes for the lower score.

Server Details

Our Quake Wars server is a 64 bit AMD box with 1 GB of RAM running 64 bit Debian Linux. This server runs on weekends (Sat/Sun) ONLY. On weekdays we run Quake 4 in the same slot.

The server is running version 1.5 of the game with an 'Objective Mode' map cycle.

Getting and installing Quake Wars

You obviously will need a copy of Quake Wars to connect to the server and play. Simply buy a copy (also available via Steam) and install and then patch to the latest version. If you are using Linux, simply install the Quake Wars v1.5 Linux binaries and have the game DVD in the drive during installation.

You can now proceed to connecting to the server.

Connecting to the server

As long as your version of Quake Wars is correct, connecting to the server is simple. To connect to the server, do the following:

1) Start Quake Wars
2) Drop the command console.

The console is accessed using the ' key (usually beside number key 1) or ~ key.

3) Type the following to initiate the connection:

connect etqw.altfire.com

That's it, you should now be connected. You'll need some friends to play, so best to organise beforehand. However, bots will occupy empty slots until other players arrive :)

Note: you must have Punkbuster enabled to play on our server. This can be enabled from within the game itself while on the multiplayer screen.
